When we think of getting our best hair and skin, we think about oils, scrubs, conditioners (you know we don't use that other s-word here ;-)), but we should really be concentrating on something else—what we put in our mouths. Diets rich in antioxidants—like vitamins A, C, and E—complex carbohydrates, protein, and polyunsaturated, commonly known as PUFAs, are the fast track to the look you always wanted.
Diets rich in antioxidants—like vitamins A, C, and E—proteins, omega-3s, complex carbohydrates (no refined sugars), and polyunsaturated fats—commonly known as PUFAs which are abundant in avocado oil, hazelnut oil, and pumpkin seed oil, among other good fats—will give your hair and skin the vibrance, strength, and resilience you always wanted. Why are these so powerful? These healthy foods are the foundations of healthy cell membranes, enabling your skin to look plumper and more youthful. They also nourish your follicles, enabling your hair to grow faster. Apparently, the secret to a better look isn't what you put on your body, but, actually, what you put in it.
And, cosmetics distributors have gotten the word too. There's now a new brand of products, known as cosmeceuticals that are fortified with many of these potent ingredients. Many makeup, skin-care, and hair-care products are fortified with vitamin C (we've all been obsessed with vitamin C serums) and carotenoids are becoming more of a common ingredient, which not only helps us develop healthy skin, but also builds our immunity.
With the benefits, inside and outside, we get from healthy foods, here a few tips:
- Add a healthy fat—olive oil, avocado, nut butter, etc.—to each meal. Be mindful of any allergies.
- Make buckwheat, quinoa, and black rice staple foods—safe for those with celiac disease
- Let black coffee be your friend, full of antioxidants
- Love the color: vegetables that are brown, green, red, yellow (and other rich hues) are stacked with nutrients
